Read more about Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand
Neil & Tania Murray have returned from work with CBM in West Africa.
They
now work part-time with Fred Hollows Foundation NZ - working to eliminate avoidable blindness - in the Pacific region. In
particular Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste. Their roles are similar to the roles they had
in Africa. Neil has a clinical oversight
and training role, and Tania has an administrative oversight role.
Their
commitment involves working in the Pacific for three months of the year in
total, usually in 2 week blocks. Fred
Hollows Foundation NZ is a secular organisation but, surprise, surprise is full
of active Christians. One of the real joys
of working in the Pacific, is that the islanders wear their Christianity on
their sleeves and cover all aspects of the work with prayer constantly.
The main goal of all the activities of Fred Hollows is to train and equip the locals to do the
eye care work themselves - to actually do ourselves out of a job in the long
term. To this end in particular a
training institute for eye doctors and nurses has been established in Suva Fiji,
and another for eye nurses in Medang PNG.
With limited finances, and a good old kiwi–can-do mindset the outputs of
this organisation are truly amazing and bountiful. We are privileged to be able to work with
them.
When
we are not in the Pacific we are working in a new eye clinic in Rotorua.
